Pelham Manor is proud to report our Department of Public Works continues to support planting native species. Most recently, a patch of grass area was planted with native trees and shrubs to provide habitat restoration. Preparation of the site began in Fall 2023, crews put down clean cardboard and covered the area with leaves. In the early Spring, DPW ordered plants through New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYS DEC) Spring Seedling Sale. These low-cost seedlings are a great option for habitat restoration on public lands.
On May 7, DPW’s efforts were supported by Pelham Cadette Troop #2617 and members of EcoPel. The group gathered to plant the seedlings in the area between Shore Road and the restroom facility at Shore Park. This effort is a continued partnership, with the first planting having taken place back in 2021 at Veterans Park. It is great to see the youth in our community have such a dedicated interest in the environment, and also community service!
