Elections run by employees hired by incumbents aren’t free and fair; shift Pelham Manor voting to November

To the editor:

I am writing to express my support for the referendum to hold our Pelham Manor elections in November. Having free and fair elections is one of the core tenets of democracy: An election in which employees hired by the incumbent candidates manage the vote cannot be viewed as a “free and fair” one. I feel that this set-up has caused concern and distress in the Manor in recent years; the tone and content of pre- and post-election conversations is one of personal attacks, theories and accusations. These conversations should instead be focused entirely on the issues and solutions impacting the Manor day to day. An election run in November by professional election officials would remove feelings of mistrust and allow for increased attention to the local matters. This move would also save the Manor a significant amount of money—$10,000 at a minimum. These funds could be better used to support the day-to-day needs of our community.

I will be voting “yes” on Nov. 5 because I want Pelham Manor to continue to thrive and grow as an inclusive community where everyone has a voice and the focus is on the support and betterment of our neighborhood. Let’s work together for the best interests of the Manor.
