Moving Pelham Manor elections to November could threaten village’s financial health

To the editor:

As a long-time resident of Pelham, since 2013, I will be voting “no” on Proposition 3, and here’s why.

Pelham is unique, consisting of both the Village of Pelham and the Village of Pelham Manor, each with very different financial situations. The Village of Pelham is currently facing significant debt, amounting to millions, much of it incurred after that village switched to November elections, with no opposing candidates coming forward to challenge village leadership. Pelham Manor strives to keep a much healthier financial status for its taxpayers. This financial disparity is reflected in various aspects of our community life, including trash and recycling services, street maintenance, parking issues and town repairs, for example.

There is a real concern that voters may follow party lines without fully considering Pelham Manor’s specific needs when local elections coincide with national elections in November. It’s crucial for the Pelham Manor community, which has shown fiscal responsibility ever since I have lived here, to prioritize local interests. Maintaining the local elections in March will allow Pelham Manor voters more time and careful consideration when making important decisions that affect their lives on a daily basis.
